Shopper Insights September 2026

Nearly Half of Shoppers Start Christmas Planning Before November This Year

New 2026 data shows 24% of U.S. consumers started Christmas shopping by August and 49% begin before the end of October, with women leading the early-shopper wave — a shift that applies just as much to planning a holiday gathering as it does to buying gifts.

What's trending

According to Printway's 2026 Christmas Market Insight report, 24% of U.S. consumers had already started their Christmas shopping by August, and 49% of consumers start before the end of October entirely. The report, which draws on Statista and multi-platform search data, also found a gender split in timing: 25% of female shoppers begin in early November, compared to 20% of men who wait until November or later. The report's takeaway for sellers is blunt — campaigns and inventory need to be ready by September, because waiting until November means missing the early-bird segment completely.

Why it's resonating

Economic caution is a big part of the story. Shoppers who plan and shop earlier tend to be more deliberate and spread costs out over a longer window rather than facing one big December crunch — which applies just as much to planning a holiday gathering as it does to buying gifts. The earlier someone locks in a date and starts organizing, the less scrambling (and price pressure) they deal with later in the season.

What this means for your own planning timeline

If shoppers are already thinking about Christmas in September, hosts planning a holiday gathering are almost certainly in the same boat — and invitations are one of the first things that need to go out once a date is set.
